3. BT Payphones
The Council considered accepting or rejecting the District Council’s proposal to remove the public payphones situated at 20 High Street and the junction of Yarmouth Road, High Street. The Council also considered whether to adopt the kiosks for £1 each.
The Council noted that no telephone calls had been made from either payphone for a year therefore there was no objection to the removal of both payphones from the kiosks.
Cllr. Ian Shaw reported he inspected the kiosks and they were in good condition with no evidence of vandalism however they required tidying up and cleaning. Cllr. Shaw said power would be provided for lighting. The Council noted the kiosks were of a modern design and therefore did not form part of the village’s heritage assets.
The Council assessed the reasons for and against adopting the kiosks. Consideration was given to using the kiosks as notice boards, for storage or for promoting village events. The liabilities such as malicious damage, insurance cover and the cost of removal in future were also considered.
Cllr. David Childs proposed that both kiosks should not be adopted. Cllr. John Sutherell seconded. There were eight votes in favour and one abstention.
ACTION: Clerk to inform SCDC.
The meeting closed at 6:20 pm.
